                                      Hemorrhoids
.Hemorrhoids are a common problem that afflicts half of adults over the age of 50. It is a problem that is often embarrassing to confide to our doctors and anyone else for that matter. The most common symptom of internal hemorrhoids is rectal bleeding. Since bleeding can also be a symptom of other more serious disorders (such as colon cancer), it is important to get an accurate diagnosis.

What is a hemorrhoid? A hemorrhoid is a downwardly displaced anal cushion - collections of blood vessels, smooth muscle fibers, and elastic connective tissue.

What causes hemorrhoids? Anal cushions normally work to support the anal canal and lining during defecation. Straining during bowel movements and pregnancy can cause the supporting tissue to deteriorate resulting in hemorrhoids.

How to treat hemorroids? Treatment depends on the severity and persistence of the hemorrhoid. In severe cases, rubber band ligation or surgery may be required. The important thing is to get diagnosed ASAP and begin treatment right away before the problem requires a more invasive approach..

Treatment using TCM. In Chinese medicine, we approach the treatment of hemorrhoids in a number of different ways:
                                      • Chinese herbs. There are some excellent and effective Chinese herbal formulas that are designed to stop bleeding, clear heat, resolve itching, and soften and move the bowels.
                                      • Acupuncture. Treatment is designed to address the underlying cause as well as the symptoms (distal points located in the lower leg are primarily used)
                                      • Diet. A change in diet is a major part of addressing hemorrhoids. Learn what to eat and what not to eat.
                                      • Self-care practices including daily warm baths, kegel exercises, avoiding prolonged periods of sitting or standing, and hand-washing area instead of using a washcloth.

                                      Very Funny Joke
Two doctors opened an office in a small town and put up a sign reading "Dr. Smith and Dr. Jones, Psychiatry and Proctology."
The town council was not happy with the sign, so the doctors changed it to "Hysterias and Posteriors."

This was not acceptable either, so in an effort to satisfy the council they changed the sign to "Schizoids and Hemorrhoids." No go.

Next, they tried "Catatonics and High Colonics." Thumbs down again.

Then came "Manic Depressives and Anal Retentives." Still not good.

Another attempt resulted in "Minds and Behinds." Unacceptable again.

So they tried "Lost Souls and Ass Holes." No way.

                                      "Analysis and Anal Cysts?" Nope.

                                      "Nuts and Butts?" Uh-uh.

"Freaks and Cheeks?" Still no go.

                                      "Loons and Moons?" Forget it.

Almost at their wit's end, the doctors finally came up with: "Dr. Smith and Dr. Jones, Odds and Ends." The town council loved it, and finally everybody was happy.
