Treating Arthritic Pain With Alternative Medicine

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a painful and potentially disabling disease of the joints that affects more than 16 million Americans. This disease carries an economic cost in excess of $8 billion dollars annually. The primary symptoms of OA are pain and lack of mobility in the affected joints. Western Medical doctors commonly prescribe analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs which treat only the symptoms of the disease. These prescribed drugs are not always effective for all individuals and sometimes produce side effects. Recent studies show Vioxx to have potentially fatal side effects.

In the largest clinical study conducted on the effects of acupuncture on arthritis of the knee, researchers found that acupuncture caused a 40% improvement in function.

What are the effects of Vitamin A and Beta-Carotene?

Beta-Carotene is a pigment found in dark green and deep orange fruits and vegetables. Beta-Carotene converts into Vitamin A. The major properties of Vitamin A are:

  • Maintains good vision and protects against night blindness.
  •
  • Helps build and repair bones, teeth, hair, nails, skin, and the mucous membranes of the lungs, digestive and reproductive tracts.
  •
  • Activates the thymus gland and immune system, and reduces susceptibility to infections.
  •
  • Lowers incidence of cancer of the lungs, stomach, colon, bladder, uterus, ovaries, and skin.

  • Vitamin A deficiency
often appears as rough, dry, prematurely aged and wrinkled skin; skin diseases in general; loss of sense of smell; allergies; dandruff; night blindness; eye inflammation; and dryness of the mucous membranes of the mouth and of the respiratory and reproductive systems.
Foods rich in Vitamin A: Spirulina, wheat/barley grass, carrot, sweet potato, kale, parsley, spinach, turnip green, beet green, green onions, watercress, winter squash, collard, Swiss chard, Chinese cabbage, apricot, romaine lettuce, persimmon, cantaloupe, and peach.
